Irony Overdose

Many Americans, like Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin, are incensed at (some) Muslims because they're burning our flag. They must be punished for this, because our flag is sacred!

Many Muslims are incensed at the US, and are burning our flags, because (some) of us have insulted their prophet. We must be punished for this, because the prophet is sacred!

I'm over here on the sidelines, banging my head on the desk, hoping that this will dislodge the irony that I'm choking on.

One of my senators wants a constitutional amendment to nab her fellow Americans who burn American flags and toss them into prison.

Didn't you come up with something to the effect of "the essence of politics is 'it's different when *we* do it'"?

*sigh* Yes. Yes I did. But on some level, I feel like more people should spot the irony when it's the exact same incident, at the exact same time, on both sides.

I wonder how often Muslims who denigrate Christ or Christianity are murdered for having done so.

Depends on how far back in time you want to go to start counting.

We can arrest those foreign flag burners. too. The Reagan-era "Thornburgh Doctrine" (named for his attorney general who formulated it) says that anyone, anywhere in the world, who does something that would be illegal under US law can be kidnapped, brought to the US, and tried, even if what they were doing was perfectly legal in the country where it was done, and which they were a citizen of. So a Dutch citizen selling hashish in an Amsterdam coffee house could be brought to the states and tried for drug trafficking based on the US law prohibiting it.

I am glad that I am not such a slave to either that I feel the need to burn it.

My irony gland exploded a long time ago. I've been ever so much happier without it?

*hands you some homemade kettle corn*

Just sit back and watch the stupid. There's so much of it to enjoy!

There's probably a smart remark that can be made there about "this is what happens when you worship icons", but it would probably only make both of them mad and want to burn me.

I think "idolatry" would be accurate, and even more infuriating.

Indeed. It was on just this ground that my Independent Baptist theology instructors taught us to avoid bibliolatry. They argued that if you get offended at the destruction or desecration of an object, it means that you're not worshiping God, you're worshiping that object.

By that logic, the number of people actually worshiping the being represented by the Tetragrammaton is a lot lower than the number of purple claiming to do so.

...that's how a lot of them justify their "persecuted minority" shtick, isn't it?

Notice the lack of nationwide riots and the slaughtering of ambassadors of the countries who've burned US flags? Upset is fine, violence is not.

hey, Todd Akin is a true amurikn patriot! That flag represents our FREEDOM! By the way, there's a new ad out, he has a woman on it who has been through an abortion and had been raped, not clear whether the two are related or not. She is pretty much giving the do as I say, not as I do speech. Also, there's a Russian woman who said she was friends with the Akins and that they are decent "normal" people that only want the best for others, and to not let the United States turn into the horrible place Russia is/was. I'm sure he totally reclaimed himself with that one!
