Read Kai Wright Today Instead of Me

Brad @ Burning Man
I got distracted by an argument that I'm working very hard to stay out of, to not get dragged into, in somebody else's blog. So distracted I couldn't get anything productive done last night. Fortunately, I have something to offer you that's on a subject near and dear to my heart, and at least as good a read as anything I've done: Kai Wright, "If They Are So Scared, How Come We're The Dead Ones?," TheRoot.com, 4/28/08. This subject needs to keep coming up until everybody, especially everybody in law enforcement, smartens up about it.

Thanks. It gets into some detail about something I'd noticed-- the belief that the police's fear should be prioritized over everything else.

Have you seen this massive flame about people who reflexively excuse those in authority?

As with the other arguments, I find this one specious.

Thank you for the link. For work purposes, I must keep track of law enforcement training as put forth by policeone.com and Force Science Center.

On the one hand, police are patting themselves on the back for fewer officer fatalities.

On the other, police are changing departmental policies and in-service training to make shooting incidents more likely and more deadly. (I'd be happy with 'less likely and more deadly,' myself.)

The 'us versus them' mentality in police work is probably among the top ten threats to liberty in this century.

Oh yeah, every time I see a cop car behind me, and I think about him pulling me over, I think, "OMG, I hope that guy is Officer Friendly, or even Officer Barbrady, but please, Lord, let him not be Officer Safety, or Officer Cartman."

I really do prefer Peace Officers to Law Enforcement Officers.

Oh, and I do understand how you got so upset about the verdict in NYC: One of the things which led me to conclude that I have a touch of autism is that I got quite literally hoppin' mad about some cops being unjust and getting away with it, a few years ago, to the extent that I hopped up and came down wrong, and sprained an ankle
